Movie Review: An American Carol

Movie Review: An American Carol

by Rob Viglione

When Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, can raise $9 million in two days in Hollywood this month, it’s fairly clear that the entertainment world is heavily skewed to the left. Not being on the left makes it hard for me to stomach anything coming out of Hollywood with any sort of political spin. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised with David Zucker’s “An American Carol.” Set to release in early October, this is one of the rare conservative films jam packed with star power. It’s cast includes giants and its message is clear: Freedom has meaning is well worth fighting for!

Zucker’s comedy is a frontal assault on several key liberal issues, focusing on the war on terrorism, the clash between the West and Islam, and even something near and dear to the socialist soul…government-run healthcare.

Michael Moore’s documentary, “Sicko”, was an extremely contentious critique on the American healthcare system, going so far as to compare it to Cuba’s Communist model…according to Moore’s radical logic the Communist system scored superior compared to ours! “An American Carol” begins with a spoof on “Sicko”, showing a smug “Malone” (Moore’s double) strolling past long lines of “common people” awaiting care, empty lines for “party officials,” and well-armed soldiers keeping order. The scene finale shows a mad rush of Cubans fighting each other to get aboard a far-too-small boat to flee the country. The take-away: let’s not forget that Cubans routinely flee for America and there’s a reason for that!

The next scene shows a spoof on a group of incompetent Islamic jihadists plotting to kill a crowd of Afghan civilians lining up to vote. Despite the humor, this is the reality that Afghans were forced to suffer under the Taliban regime. The movie’s jihadists then come to the hilarious decision to use American liberal media to produce an anti-American terrorist training video. Zucker does a great job reminding us that there’s a reason we went to war (at least in Afghanistan!), and whether or not we wish to acknowledge it, Islamic radicals will continue to plot the murder of Americans.

Probably the funniest scene in the film is a spoof on “radical Christians,” in which Rosie O’Donnell (a Rosie actress, that is) tries to argue that radical Christians are more of a threat than radical Islamic jihadists. She pitches a made up video showing nuns blowing up buses and priests hijacking airplanes. Bold, contentious, and hilarious! The point here is that despite the overwhelming urge for political correctness in our society, we are, in fact, at war against radical elements of Islam. Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and even pagans are not the ones targeting civilians in suicide bombings. We must face reality and figure out how to best face the world for what it is.

It’s not often that Hollywood tells us we should be proud to be American, support troops who are fighting a deadly, unyielding foe, and that free market Capitalism is superior to Communist and other government-run economies. These are observations economists and historians understand, but modern liberals fail to acknowledge.
