Eads’s was an acclaimed engineer-inventor.  He won the contract because he boldly proposed that he could build the state-of-the-art gunboats in only sixty-three days, for $89,000 per boat.  He incentivized the Federal Government by proposing to forfeit $250 for each day he missed the deadline. (Note 2)

Eads ignored a chorus of naysayers who said he couldn’t build gunboats and forged ahead with ingenious and creative solutions to get the boats built on time. The keels of the gunboats were laid in Carondelet, Missouri, outside St. Louis, and Mound City, Illinois, by Cairo. Using his master organizer skills, Eads subcontracted out separate piece work to numerous contractors located in a variety of cities such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and St.Louis. Being ahead of his time, Eads networked and coordinated these efforts using telegraph communications.

A taskmaster and a ‘stickler for details,’ Eads pushed his 800 construction workers at a relentless pace day and night. The largest foundries and machine shops in St. Louis were pushed to create a nearly constant stream of parts for his gunboats.

The Union’s new flotilla of gunboats received their ‘baptism of fire,’ in the battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, Tennessee and played prominent roles in the Union’s victories and subsequent control of the crucial waterways in the Tennessee River Valley and the Mississippi River. (Note 3)

The city had been in the middle of the Ypres Salient, a section of the lines sticking out towards German lines. Historically, the town can certainly be traced back to the 12th century. In spite of generations of fighting and occupation, the town grew however with the outbreak of The First World War, it was under German control.

The First Battle of Ypres in the course of October and November 1914 saw Britain and her Allies capture Ypres from the German Army and in spite of serious fighting all around Ypres until eventually World War I finished in 1918, the Germans did not recapture the town.

The iconic Cloth Hall and quite a few other properties were reduced to rubble and centuries of heritage went with them. In 1933, rebuilding began on the Cloth Hall and this was eventually completed in 1967 having been painstakingly rebuilt to revive its heritage. These days, the Cloth Hall in Ypres is home to the In Flanders Fields Museum.

For the duration of World War I, the Menin Gate was simply an exit cut in the eastern ramparts of Ypres. A number of Allied soldiers would’ve passed through this exit on the way to the front lines. In 1927, the Menin Gate Memorial was unveiled. At La Boisselle, the Tyneside Irish was essentially destroyed as it attempted to advance more than 1 mile over open ground in full sight of German machine guns.

However, there were some achievements. The French had made progress in the north and south of the lines. The 36th Ulster moved on and took the Schwaben Redoubt consequently becoming one of the few to attain their objective. Sadly, running out of ammo, German counter attacks compelled the Ulstermen to withdraw later that night.

The first day of the Somme had cost Britain almost 54,000 casualties, 21,000 of those being killed. These days, the site of the Schwaben Redoubt is marked by the Ulster Tower and nearby at Thiepval, the Memorial to the Missing commemorates the names of nearly 70,000 soldiers who fought at the Battle of the Somme.
